Let’s talk about intellectual property…what is it? A work or invention that is the result of creativity, such as a manuscript or a design, to which one has rights and for which one may apply for a patent, copyright, trademark, etc. A great example would be, your favorite musical artist owning their work. A catalogue so to speak. This goes for movies, books, designs, writings, things of that nature.

How does this apply to you as an entrepreneur or just someone looking to diversify your income? Well, think of it this way. This is something that you only have to create once, and it’ll pay you for life. Whether it be a course you created, an ebook, or a graphic design. Something so simple can literally pay you for the rest of your life. But before you charge ahead with creating this residual income. Let’s clarify the differences between copyrights, trademarks, and patents.

Copyright: the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same.

Trademark: a symbol, word, or words legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product.

Patent: a government authority or license conferring a right or title for a set period, especially the sole right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention.

Now that you’ve got the scoop on intellectual properties, and you know the differences between copyright, trademark, and patent. What will you create to acquire some residual income for yourself?
